Dr. Ian Barclay

Dr. Ian Barclay is a native of Spruce Grove, Alberta. He earned his undergraduate degree in Laboratory Medicine from the University of Alberta in 1992 and worked in a clinical lab for the Alberta Cancer Board for four years before deciding to pursue a career in optometry. While attending the Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon, he met his wife, Sallie, who is also an optometrist.

During his 20+ year career, Dr. Barclay has experienced many diverse practice settings where he has gained many patient’s trust as a full scope eyecare professional. He provides comprehensive optometric care (including the treatment and management of ocular disease and contact lens fittings) for patients of all ages.

Dr. Barclay enjoys hockey, golf, downhill skiing, and mountain biking, which makes Cochrane the perfect place to call home! He enjoys many of these activities with his family and when time allows you’ll see him actively involved in the community.

Dr. Sallie Barclay

Dr. Sallie Barclay is originally from Brainerd, Minnesota and earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota in 1996. While attending the Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon, she met her husband, Ian, who is also an optometrist and a native Albertan. She received her doctorate of Optometry in 2000, graduating with distinction.

Her clinical experiences include externships on a Navajo reservation in northern Arizona and an optometry/ophthalmology referral center in Seattle, Washington, as well as an eyecare mission to Costa Rica. Dr. Barclay practiced in Minnesota before moving to Cochrane in 2002. She practiced in Airdrie, Cochrane, and Calgary prior to opening Cochrane Family Vision in 2014.

Dr. Barclay is an active member of the Alberta Association of Optometrists and served on the Alberta College of Optometrists Council from 2008 to 2016, serving as President in 2013-2014. She provides comprehensive optometric care (including the treatment and management of ocular disease and contact lenses) and strives to care for each patient like family. Dr. Barclay enjoys many activities including downhill skiing, travel, and spending time with her family.

Dr. Danae Walsh

Dr. Danae Walsh grew up in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, then received her undergraduate degree from the University of Saskatchewan in Psychology in 1998. She attended the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago for her Doctorate in Optometry, graduating in 2002 on the Dean’s List for Clinical Skills.

Dr. Walsh completed a one-year post-doctoral Residency in Family Practice at the University of Houston, College of Optometry. During her residency, she gained advanced clinical competencies in a variety of aspects of optometric care including specialty contact lens, low vision, pediatrics and binocular vision, and treatment and management of ocular disease.

Upon returning to Canada, Dr. Walsh worked in Fort Saskatchewan, where she began dating her husband. They moved to Calgary for a few years and then decided to settle in Cochrane. She has practiced at Cochrane Family Vision since August 2016. Cochrane is the perfect balance of small town friendliness and big city amenities. They enjoy traveling and activities with their two young children. Each summer, they return to northern Saskatchewan to golf, fish, boat, and enjoy their family cabins.

Dr. Jonah Gilham

Dr. Jonah Gilham was born in Fort McMurray and raised in central Alberta. After moving many times throughout Alberta, he graduated high school in Medicine Hat. During his life, he has been heavily involved with sports and when it was time for post-secondary studies, he found himself playing volleyball for Red Deer College and MacEwan University.

After studying mathematics in undergrad, he started optometry school at the University of Waterloo where he graduated with honours in 2020. He was a sports representative for his student society and was also the recipient of the Michael Gutwein Memorial Award for his drive to encourage others to participate in social and athletic events. He also received the Drs. Wensveen and Smith Award for excellence in the studies of binocular vision and perception.

During his studies, he has been able to accumulate clinical experience around the world. In his fourth year, he travelled to Oklahoma to work at a Cherokee Nation health clinic, providing eye care for the Cherokee people. He has also been on trips with both VOSH and Canadian Vision Care to service underprivileged communities in South America and Africa. He practiced in Grande Prairie after graduation before joining Cochrane Family Vision in July 2022.

Outside of the clinic, his time includes playing and coaching volleyball and basketball, tutoring math and sciences, and spending time with friends and family.

Dr. Gilham is excited to share all he has learned with the people of Cochrane!
